Summer 2007 MEC LAB TEAM

Guidelines and essential information for research students working in the MEC LAB

Welcome

Welcome to summer research in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware for the summer of 2007! This year, we will have several students working on various research projects in the MEC LAB. In this guide we collect essential information for all MEC LAB associated students and faculty. Please feel free to suggest additions to these notes. We hope you a safe, productive, and enjoyable summer!

Contact Information

Contact information for faculty supervisors:

John A. Pelesko, Ewing Room 406, (302) 831-1467 (Office), email: pelesko@math.udel.edu

Louis Rossi, Ewing Room 524, (302) 831-1880 (Office), email: rossi@math.udel.edu

Getting Paid

For those of you being paid this summer, your paperwork should be complete by now. If you have any problems you should see the department’s administrator:

Jan Burns, Ewing Room 502, (302) 831-1862

Most of you are being paid from different sources, so it is unlikely that you will all be on the same pay schedule. So, don’t panic if your neighbor gets paid and you don’t! Also, you should be aware that taxes are withheld for summer workers at UD.

Lab Access

During the summer Ewing Hall will be open every weekday. It is locked on weekends. Every student will have a key to the MEC LAB and hence access to the lab on weekdays. Please take care not to lose your key! Also, when you are finished with your project, please return your key to your faculty sponsor or to Jan Burns (contact info above). While you are working in the lab, you may wish to prop the door open. This is ok, but please close and lock the door whenever you leave! Do not leave the lab open and unattended! Doing so is a safety hazard and increases the risk of theft. If you need access to the lab on a weekend, please arrange this directly with your faculty supervisor.

Lab Safety

In general, you will not be working with hazardous materials, nonetheless, all of you will from time to time use equipment that is dangerous if misused. Please observe the following safety requirements:

·         Wear goggles. There are more than enough goggles in the lab for everyone to use. There are a variety of styles. Find a style that you are comfortable with and make it a habit to pick up your goggles as soon as you enter the lab. If anyone in the lab is using equipment that is a potential eye hazard, you must be wearing your goggles.

·         Wear gloves and a lab coat if you feel it is necessary. While no one will be handling hazardous chemicals, you may feel more comfortable with gloves and a lab coat.

·         Know the location of the eye wash station and how to use it.

·         Know the location of the safety shower and how to use it.

·         Know the location of the exit door.

·         Know the location of first aid kits in the lab and familiarize yourself with the contents.

·         Know the number of public safety (x2222) and call if needed.

·         MSDS sheets are located in a binder in the lab. Check these before using any potentially hazardous material.

·         Make use of spill pads whenever necessary.

·         Do not hesitate to correct and report someone violating these rules.

·         Find more information at http://www.udel.edu/OHS/

Additionally, there are fire extinguishers in the lab. Familiarize yourself with their use, but remember the first priority is your safety. It is better to exit the lab and call for help than to attempt to extinguish a fire on your own.

Lab Policies

There will be quite a few people working in a fairly small cluttered space this summer. In order to maximize effectiveness and minimize frustration, please follow the following guidelines:

·         When you are done with a tool, put it back in its proper place so that others may find it easily.

·         Keep the lab clean and neat. If you make a mess that needs to be vacuumed, please vacuum it yourself as soon as possible.

·         At the end of each day, please tidy up your work area. At the end of each week, pitch in in cleaning the lab.

·         Accidents happen and things get broken. If something breaks, please clean it up and let a faculty advisor know so that the item may be replaced.

·         Make use of spill pads. This allows for easy clean up.

·         There is a list on the board of things we need in the lab. Please add items you think are needed as soon as you think of them!

·         There are some expensive items in the lab, cameras, power supplies, etc. Please do not use these without proper training or talking to a faculty advisor first. While small items can be easily replaced, items such as our high speed camera are irreplaceable!

·         Notice that the summer mini-symposium is on Wednesday of your last week of summer research. The Thursday and Friday of that week will be lab clean-up days. You should expect to help clean and organize the lab for the next batch of workers.

Computer Access

There are a variety of computers in the MEC LAB. We will create accounts for each of you on the networked computers. There are also computers in the Undergraduate Lounge that you may use. Please do not use the MEC LAB computers as archives for your data or your work. Many people will be working on these machines and it is easy for your work to get lost or deleted. Each machine has a CD burner, please backup your data regularly.
